C.S.I.R.O

August 15th, 2008 by vjenkins

On the 11th August scientist Gwen from the CSIRO visited the Bright Sparks to teach us a little about the human body. We got to do lots of experiments. We looked for germs on our skin under a microscope and tested our lung capacity and pulse rate. We looked at x-rays and investigated joints and bones on a model skeleton. We were able to investigate the insides of our body with a plastic model that you could pull apart and put back together. It was a bit tricky to get all the parts back in the right place. We were able to explore our senses through taste, smell and eye testing. Gwen ended the science lesson with an experiment which showed what happens in our stomach when we swallow a tablet. The science was fantastic. We hope to do some more experiments in our classroom this term.

Jolly Bops

On the 11th June Bright Sparks went to watch Jolly Bops in the hall. The Jolly Bops came to our school to teach us all about Aboriginal science and show us how to do Aboriginal things. They also showed us how to do magic with a flower and how to play the Didgeridoo. There was a grey silvery robot. The robot loved Ms K. They also did an experiment and where they put dry ice in a tin and put the lid on and the kept coming off  the tin. The robot tried to put the lid back on, but it kept flying off. It was a very exiting performance.

Machines with Jean

This week Bright Sparks were visited by the C.S.I.R.O. We went to the hall to learn all about simple machines. The science teacher’s name was Jean. In the lesson we used Lego bits & pieces to make some simple machines. We  made  handles that can spin two wheels at a time. We also made a carousel with lots off pieces. When we turned the carousels some of  the little pieces kept falling  off.  When some of the groups were finished they got to make other types of things with the Lego.  Bright Sparks love science with the C.S.I.R.O. Saja said, “This science stuff is the coolest”.

We are creating a wiki page all about simple machines. Click on the link in our blogroll “Bright Sparks Wiki” to find out how much we know about simple machines. The page will be added to every week, so don’t forget to keep coming back to take a look.

Wicked Science!!!!!!!

February 20th, 2008 by vjenkins

Today Bright Sparks went to a science class in the school hall. Jason and Mitch from the CSIRO showed us how to use some science equipment and to do some experiments. In the beginning Jason gave us instructions and information about using the equipment and doing the experiments. He also taught us some new scientific words, such as, hypothesis, fair test and variables.  Then we all did an experiment to find out which metal will make the most electricity.  Jonathan’s group wanted to find out how much electricity was in William’s head and so attached the wires to his head. After that we got into small groups and started the experiements. Each group did a different experiment. One group worked with a pendulum and timed the length of a swing using different weights and another group measured the distance covered by geared Lego robots. There was also an experiment which measured the time it took to disolve different sized crystals and another that measured the amount of gas produced by two different salts. We were all enjoying ourselves so much that the time went past so quickly and before we knew it, it was recess, but nobody wanted to go outside. We are all looking forward to our next science session next week.
